Most AI scripts fail in the same spot: the 30-second cliff, where curiosity runs out and the viewer's thumb finds the back button. Retention-first writing means engineering the script so there's always a reason to stay, and that's a prompting problem before it's a writing one.

Why default AI scripts lose viewers

Ask a model for "a script about X" and it hands you an encyclopedia entry: a throat-clearing intro, evenly weighted paragraphs, a tidy summary. Every one of those instincts is wrong for retention. Encyclopedia structure front-loads context nobody asked for and spends its energy being complete instead of compelling. The fix is to prompt for tension, not coverage - to make the model write toward an open loop rather than a table of contents.

The open-loop architecture

Retention is a chain of open loops: every beat raises a question the next beat answers, while quietly opening a new one. The hook poses the biggest loop, the payoff lands near the end, and the middle is a ladder of smaller loops that keep the viewer climbing. This is the same beat-sheet logic that anchors the full AI faceless video pipeline; the script just makes those beats audible.

  • Hook (0-15s): state the promise and the stakes; never explain who you are or what the channel does.
  • Re-hook (15-30s): the highest-churn window - add a specific detail or contrarian claim that reframes the promise.
  • Body beats: one idea each, every one ending on a small cliff ("but that's where it gets strange...").
  • Payoff + button: close the biggest loop, then point to the next video.
Write toward the question the viewer is already asking - then answer it one beat later than they expect.

The copy-paste prompt template

This is the base prompt we run for 6-8 minute faceless videos. Feed it your validated title and beat sheet; it's tuned to produce spoken cadence and deliberate open loops instead of prose.

You are a retention script writer for a faceless YouTube channel.
TITLE: {title}
BEATS: {7-9 one-line beats}

Rules:
- Write for the EAR, not the eye. Short clauses. Concrete nouns. No wind-up.
- HOOK (first 15s): state the promise + stakes in 2 sentences. No intro, no "in this video."
- RE-HOOK (by 0:30): add one specific detail or contrarian claim that reframes the promise.
- Every beat ends on an open loop that the NEXT beat pays off.
- Vary sentence length; read-aloud test must not trip.
- End with a one-line payoff, then a button line pointing to a related video.

Output: narration only, marked with [BEAT n] tags. No stage directions.

Run it, then read the draft aloud once. Any sentence you stumble on gets cut or split - the model won't hear the friction, but a viewer will.

The 30-second cliff is where default AI scripts die; open loops are the guardrail.

Editing the draft for retention

The model gives you 80%; the last 20% is subtraction. Cut every sentence that explains rather than advances. Tighten the re-hook until it lands before 0:30 - pull up your retention graph and the churn cliff sits almost exactly there. Then confirm each beat's cliff actually pays off in the next. Models sometimes open loops they forget to close, which reads as a bait-and-switch and quietly trains viewers to distrust the narration.

Closing the loop with packaging

A retention-first script is half a package. The other half is a thumbnail that promises exactly what the hook delivers - build it with the CTR-first thumbnail workflow so the two never contradict each other. Together they feed the same feedback loop the algorithm rewards, the one dissected in the CTR and AVD loop.

Prompt for tension, edit by subtraction, test by reading aloud. Do those three things and your scripts will clear the 30-second cliff far more often than the polished-but-boring drafts most channels are still shipping.
